Project Description

Vans The Simpsons

The brief

Our long lasting relationship with VANS was developed further as we embarked upon a huge collaboration between the skater brand and ‘The Simpsons’. The collection included a range of footwear and apparel lines, and were to be sold in both physical locations across the globe as well as online.

IPOS were excited to expand on the creative direction that the brand had suggested and address the challenges that came with trying to take the concepts from visuals on the page to realising them in a retail environment.

The process

After running through the campaign directive pack, and understanding the brand’s goals, IPOS set out to develop, improve and problem-solve the elements contained within the deliverables list.

Elements included the in-store activation area, in schuh, known as the Halo cube, and a shoe-riser that replicated the sofa synonymous with ‘The Simpson’ cartoon. The shoe-riser was great as an idea but involved many complexities, due to its shape, colour and form, which needed to be thought through to re-create for a retail roll-out.

Our team came together to discuss a varied array of how this could be achieved and after multiple prototypes and several review meetings we discovered the answer.

The outcome

3D printing was a great solution for the shoe-riser. Not bound by the flat profile of sheet material, it gave our team the flexibility to manipulate a 3D model in real-time and get a like for like prop that was fast and cost-effective to produce.

The final risers were wrapped in printed vinyl and lived within the Halo cube display. Paired with motion design, floor graphics, 3D elevated typography and The Simpsons yellow checker-board plinths, the in-store area not only looked impressed but delivered results too.
